Charleston, WV (HNN) - West Virginia Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox reminds motorists that the Winter Damage Repair Program - enacted to address the damage to West Virginia’s roadways caused by the significant winter events of this year - is continuing across the state.

“With the major winter storms this past season, it is not surprising that roads and bridges have taken tremendous wear and tear,” stated Secretary Mattox. “By setting aside $12 million from the State Road Fund for the Winter Damage Repair Program and dividing it proportionately among the ten Highways districts based on paved road miles, our maintenance crews are repairing the damage to our roads caused by these extraordinary winter events.”

The Winter Damage Repair Program is a supplement to DOH’s regular maintenance program and is continuing as the weather warms and asphalt plants are opening across the state. This program gives a permanent repair to damaged roads, including potholes. Permanent repair includes squaring off a damaged area of roadway and placing hot-mix asphalt to make a smooth drivable surface.

In certain areas of the state where asphalt plants have not yet opened, DOH maintenance crews will continue to patch potholes with the cold-mix method until hot-mix asphalt can be obtained and roadway damages in those areas can be permanently fixed.
