Charleston, WV (HNN) — Conrad Lucas believes passage of the state legislature's first pro-life bill in five years is a positive step.

The Ultrasound Bill, as it is more commonly known, requires a woman seeking an abortion to sign a form indicating that in the event an ultrasound is performed she has the right to view or decline the viewing of the ultrasound of the fetus.

"I am confident this is a step in the right direction in helping reduce the amount of abortions in West Virginia," said Lucas, Republican candidate for the 3rd Congressional District.

"This will assuredly help mothers change their minds and decide to continue their pregnancy when they actually see a child developing."

Before the passage of the bill, language was removed that would hold the physician criminally liable for not complying with the legislation.

"Although language was removed that would hold doctors liable, there must also be consequences for non-compliance," Lucas said.

"I am a staunch Pro-Life advocate and look forward to being part of passing similar legislation on the Federal level."

The bill passed the State Senate Saturday by unanimous vote is and currently awaiting Gov. Manchin's signature.
