Charleston, WV (HNN) – Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-SD has accepted Gov. Joe Manchin’s invitation to be the keynote speaker at the annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner (JJ). The dinner will be held Saturday, April 17, at the Charleston Civic Center.
“I consider Tom a dear friend and I am truly honored that Senator Daschle has accepted my invitation to deliver this year’s annual JJ Dinner keynote address,” Manchin said. “Tom will give West Virginians an inside, candid look into Washington and Congress. I am confident that his speech will be both enlightening and engaging.”
WV Democratic Party Chairman Nick Casey added that while our nation is recovering from a national and global recession, people are interested in politics and want to understand how Washington works. “Senator Daschle and our JJ Dinner will help kick-off the 2010 election year,” Casey said. “Senator Daschle worked well with our state's congressional delegation throughout his tenure. He will bring his many years of Capitol Hill experience to our dinner and will offer us a frank conversation about the inner workings of politics. We are sure to have an exciting night.”
Tom Daschle grew up in South Dakota and after college served as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force. He was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1978 where he served eight years. He was elected to the US Senate in 1986 and chosen as Majority Leader in 1994. Senator Daschle is one of the longest serving Senate Democratic Leaders in history and the only one to serve twice as both Majority and Minority Leader. Daschle now serves as a Senior Policy Advisor at DLA Piper in Washington, DC.
