Huntington, WV (HNN) – Marshall University men’s soccer head coach Bob Gray has announced the signing of three additional student-athletes to join the Herd for the 2010 season.
Exon Menjivar, Carl Munday and Matthew Risher join Travis Brent, Michael Hayes, Ryan Kelly and Anthony Virgara as MU’s men’s soccer signing class of 2010.
Munday is a 5-foot-9, 165 pound junior college transfer who netted 49 goals in his two years at Louisburg Community College in Louisburg, N.C. The Kent, England, native tallied 29 goals last season, which was third best in the nation. His 49 goals and 20 assists is tops in Louisburg history. Munday was an NSCAA All-American one season ago.
“We are looking for great things out of Carl,” Gray said. “He’s obviously a tremendous goal scorer and we hope that he pairs nicely with Tom Jackson up front.”
A 6-foot-3, 180 pound midfielder, Matt Risher will add depth to an already solid midfield for the Herd. Risher, a native of Charlotte, N.C., was a four-year varsity letter winner at Marvin Ridge High School, a three-year starter, a two-time all-state selection and a state championship MVP recipient. He scored over 70 goals and tallied over 40 assists in his high school career.
“Matt is very versatile,” continued Gray. “He plays at a very high level and we expect him to compete for a starting position right away.”
Finally, hailing from Sarasota, Fla., Exon Menjivar brings a relentless work attitude with him to Marshall. Playing for Strictly FC for three years, Menjivar, at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, began his time there at midfield, but evolved into a rock at the stopper position. He will be able to play both defense and midfield for the Herd in years to come.
“Exon plays bigger than he is,” said Gray. “He’s a guy that can play in the back or in the midfield position. He is a blue-collar kid and should fit in nicely with our blue-collar philosophy.”
After spring break, the Herd hits the ground running in the month of April as MU has five competition dates scheduled, highlighted by a match with the Columbus Crew of the MLS on April 2.
