Huntington, WV (HNN) – No. 30 Michaela Kissell won in first singles, and the duo of Thaddea Lock and Deanna Bailey were victorious in third doubles, however the No. 28 Marshall University women’s tennis team fell short to No. 27 Virginia on Monday afternoon, March 8, 2010 at the Huntington Tennis Center, 6-1.
Lock and Bailey improved their doubles record to 8-1 together as they won on court three by a score of 8-5; but UVA took two of three matches to lead 1-0 heading into singles.
Kissell recorded the sole win in singles play for Marshall. The junior defeated Lindsey Hardenbergh in a battle of nationally-ranked opponents 7-6, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Kissell is now 11-1 on the season.
“Virginia is a good team. We were not ready to compete emotionally and mentally at that level,” head coach John Mercer said. “When you put that combination together, it shows in the results. Hopefully we can bounce back this weekend.”
Marshall (11-2) continues action as it takes on its fifth consecutive ranked opponent in No. 64 Winthrop next Sunday, March 14th, in Rock Hill, S.C.
