Huntington, WV (HNN) -- The Marshall Women’s Golf open its spring season as it travels to Mobile, Ala. to take part in the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational. Host Southern Alabama welcome 16 squads to the Azalea City Golf Course for this two-day, 54 hole tournament, taking place on March 1st and 2nd.
Day one will consist of two-rounds (36 holes) of play, beginning with an 8 a.m. (CST) shotgun start time. The tournament will wrap up with one round (18 holes) on the second and final day, shotgun starting at 8:30 a.m. (CST).
Participating teams include; Alabama State, defending tournament champions Florida International, Lamar, Samford, Stetson, West Florida, Jackson State, Marshall, South Alabama, Troy, Winthrop, Centenary, Jacksonville State. Along with Conference USA foes; Memphis, Southern Miss and UAB.
The Thundering Herd will be represented by Larie Lynch (Huntington, W.Va.), Andrea Grier (Hagerstown, Md.), Maria Battaglia (Uniontown, Pa.), Molly Ginger (Centerville, Ohio) and Samantha DiDomenico (Follansbee, W.Va.).
“We are extremely excited for the spring season to be underway,” head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. “Although we haven’t been able to get a full round in on the course, the girls have been working really hard on swings and conditioning.”
The Thundering Herd concluded the fall season posting a team scoring average of 311, the lowest team scoring average for any one semester, breaking the previous record (lowest that could be found in archives) of 315 in the fall of 1981.
Lynch looks to continue her momentum from the fall season as she tied Tammie Green’s 1981 individual season scoring average low of 76.7. Lynch recorded top-10 finishes in three of the team’s four fall tournaments, while fellow senior Grier, added two top-10 finishes as well.
In DiDomenico’s first semester of collegiate competition, she shot a fall team-low of 72 at the UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic in late September.
“I am anxious to see how the girls will perform after the long break,” Rowsey continued. “If Steve Stricker can win on the PGA tour after being in Wisconsin for three weeks I think we can do it too.”
