Washington, DC (HNN) -- The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team collected four home runs, two from senior second baseman Deanna Tourville to guide the Herd to a 12-7 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas, in the first game of Saturday’s (May 3) nonconference doubleheader at Guy Mason Field.
The Herd (25-28) registered 15 hits in the contest with sophomore Caitlyn Jackson and Tourville combining for six of the 15. Jackson, Tourville and junior outfielder Rachael Sofie recorded home runs for the Herd.
The Hoyas (21-34) tallied nine hits, three from leadoff hitter Demetria Cipriano who teamed up with Jillian Webb to hit six of the Hoyas’ seven RBIs.
Pitching ace Jackson (13-16) picked up her 13th victory of the season after the complete-game effort. She allowed seven runs from nine hits with two walks, while hurling two strikeouts.
In the circle for Georgetown was Jennifer Connell (14-24) who finished on the losing end, surrendering 12 runs from the Herd’s 15 hits.
Tourville delivered in the first inning with one of her two home runs. The Rescue, Calif., native cracked Marshall’s 10th first inning home run to left field. In her next at bat, Tourville connected on the 0-1 Connell pitched and drilled her second homer (seventh of the season) to center field.
After Tourville’s second home run in the top of the third inning, the Herd and Hoyas were tied at three. Marshall’s designated player Rachel Schimdt delivered in the third frame with a two-RBI single to regain the Herd’s lead to 5-3.
The Hoyas trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third frame when Peters leadoff the inning with a double, which she was eventually driven home by a RBI single from Webb.
Marshall tallied at least one run in the remaining four innings to secure the victory. The Herd had eight of its nine hitters record an RBI, while Sofie, Tourville, Jackson and Schmidt all recorded two RBIs apiece.
The Herd and Hoyas will conclude the doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
