Beckley (HNN) — The Summers County Lady Bobcats took the floor at the Beckley Armory for the first time in this year’s Mountain State Coal Classic at 3:00 p.m. Feb. 1, 2005. They were matched against the Westside Renegades, a team they had defeated in regular season play a week earlier. This game ended with a solid 85 to 33 victory for the Bobcats.
The first quarter the game was halted for a moment to acknowledge Lady Bobcat senior Joanna Mills who became the all-time leading rebounder, with 687, in the Lady Bobcat program. She eclipsed the season record of 686 set by Nikki Jackson (1998 to 2000). Nikki was the post player on the 2000 Lady Bobcat AA State Champion team.
Joanna continues to work hard rehabilitating from a near fatal auto accident last year. Her hard work ethic is inspirational for other team members.
Four players on Summers County scored in double figures. Junior forward Sierra Brown came in with 19. Junior post player Katana Mullen netted 16. Junior guard Sarah Blevins hit for four 3-point buckets on the way to scoring 16 points as well. Sophomore Guard Jenni Wynes came in with 10. A trio of freshmen, Rebecca Newsome, Meagan Wheeler and Kim Boland scored 2 apiece to round out the scoring.
On a side note Joanna and Jessica Mills are twin sisters. Sierra and Jolysia Brown are sisters. And Katana Mullen and 2000-post player Nikki Jackson are first cousins.
