Huntington (HNN) — The Summers County Lady Bobcats ran their season record up to 13 wins and 1 loss with a pair of victories last week. They basically overpowered the Wyoming Westside Renegades in the game played on the latter's court last Monday, Jan. 24, 2005 at Oceana. The final score was 73 to 27.

Then on Friday night, Jan. 28, 2005, the James Monroe Mavericks came to the Summers County Gym. The Bobcat girls were ready for them. The "Cats" put them away by a score of 67 to 46.

The Lady Bobcats' were tied for 3rd with Magnolia in last week's AA coaches' poll. Wyoming East is ranked No. 2 and Petersburg remains at No. 1.

In the Westside game Jessica Mills led the scoring with 15 points, Katana Mullen followed her with 14 and Jenni Wynes netted 12. Sierra Brown grabbed 12 rebounds and Joanna Mills snatched 11. The Lady Bobcats will play Westside again Tuesday, Feb 1, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in their first game of the Coal Classic at the Beckley Civic Center.

The Lady Bobcats' Sierra Brown and Katana Mullen received honors in last week's Bluefield Daily Telegraph's Basketball Honor Roll. The two forwards picked up this week where they left off last week. They were too much for James Monroe on this January Friday night. Brown and Mullen combined for 41 points and 18 rebounds in a dominating game near the basket and in the paint.

Sierra hit a blistering 28 points, on 14 buckets. She grabbed 8 rebounds. Mullen turned in another double double this season with 13 points and 10 boards. Their combined 41 points almost matched the entire Mavericks 46 point effort. Sarah Blevins scored 9; one basket was a 3-pointer, Jessica Mills scored 6, Jenni Wynes 5, Joanna Mills 2, Jessica Williams 2 and Jolysia Brown 2. Sarah Blevins also had 4 assists.

James Monroe's high scoring Sarah Tuggle was held to only 9 points. Leslie Shrewsbury connected for 8, Laura Ballengee and Brittany Canterbury hit 7 apiece, Cassie Gillespie 6, Lena Holz 4, Holly Wilson 3 and Kelli Boone 2 to round out the Mavericks scoring. Tuggle and Ballengee each connected on a 3-pointer.

Summers County jumped on James Monroe and got out to a 15 to 0 lead as the game began. Sierra Brown scored 12 points and Katana Mullen scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the first quarter. It ended with Summers County up by a score of 21 to 9. By the end of the first half things got worse for James Monroe as they trailed by a score of 43 to 22. The Lady Bobcats played solid team ball and they never looked back. After 3 it was Summers County up by a score of 59 to 35.

After the game Coach Wayne Ryan commented that this Lady Bobcat team has great talent. However they lack the maturity at this point to develop the mentality to put teams away. This reporter agrees. They often look like the best team in the state in different quarters. Other times it seems that they have concentration lapses. "Its gel time!"

The Summers County Lady Bobcats will be busy playing in this week's Coal Classic Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Then on the following Tuesday, Feb, 8, 2005 they host Bluefield at 7:30 p.m. Two days later, on Thursday Feb. 10, 2005, they go to Oak Hill, to make up a game that was postponed due to snow. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
