Cabell Midland Needs Double OT to Beat John Marshall 66-63 in St. Joe Consolation Game

Huntington (HNN) — Seldon Edwards had 19 points and 15 rebounds, including a key tip-in with 30 seconds left to give Cabell Midland a 66-63 double overtime victory over the John Marshall Monarchs in the AAA consolation game of the St. Joe Invitational.
 
The Knights (5-10) also received 13 points from Eric Cooper, 12 from Deron Keeton and 10 points from Justin Lunsford. Keeton scored six of his 12 during the overtime sessions.
 
John Marshall (0-13) got game-highs of 20 points from Zach Amedro and Anthony Montes and 16 from Sean Freeland. Montes also tied for a team-high in rebounds with nine.
 
Cabell Midland was able to escape defeat twice with late runs in the fourth quarter and overtime. In the first overtime session, the Knights scrambled to score the final six points in overtime to send it to the second overtime session and eventually win the game.
 
A 12-4 run over the last 3:23 enabled Cabell Midland to force overtime with the Monarchs after Amedro had given John Marshall a 51-43 lead on a jumper with 2:58 remaining.
 
Cabell Midland came out in the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to pull within 44-41 after a steal and lay-up by Zach Goad, but Amedro scored seven straight points to push the lead back out before Midland made the run to force overtime.
 
John Marshall increased their lead over the first three periods as the Knights shooting continued to be off the mark.
 
The Knights especially had trouble in the third period due to a tough Monarchs defense. Cabell Midland only had two field goals in the quarter with both being lay-ups.
 
The Monarchs established a 34-27 lead at the half after going on a 13-3 run to end the first half.
 
Freeland led the Monarchs run with 11 points in the first half and Montes also had double figures at the break with 10.
 
John Marshall also had a 9-2 run near the end of the first quarter to take a 16-13 lead at the end of one period.
