Huntington (HNN) — The Marshall University men's basketball team this season is consistent in losing the close games. Wednesday night, Jan. 19, 2005 the Herd lost to Mid-American conference rival Akron 65-55 at Cam Henderson Center.
In the traditional fashion of this season, the Herd was within two points of Akron -- being down 57-55 with 2:46 left in the game and then couldn't get over the hump to win the game.
Marshall is 3-12 and 0-6 in conference play, but that record is deceiving. The Herd lost nine of those games by twelve points or less being forced to play the foul game as time ran out in many of those games.
Marshall seems so close. Rival coaches know that and have had their teams ready to play Marshall. Compounding the problem now, no team will want to be the first to lose to Marshall.
If Coach Ron Jirsa can solve the near winning problem and salvage the rest of the season with some wins Marshall may be the team to beat come tournament time.
