Deadline a Month Away for 57th Annual NAREE Journalism Competition

Boca Raton, FL (HNN) – The Deadline to postmark entries: February 5,
2007
(For work published, posted, or aired in 2006) for the 57th annual
NAREE
Real Estate Journalism Competition. Send all entries to: (this year
only
one copy is required for submission;
we recommend you keep a copy, as well.) NAREE J Contest, 1003 NW 6th

The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) Journalism
Awards
Program has recognized excellence in reporting, writing and editing
since
1949. Award winning stories and coverage run the gamut from affordable
housing, real estate lending or finance, and the business of real
estate, to
news and trend analysis on government housing policy, the environment,
urban
growth, land use investments, construction and design.
Awards Categories
The NAREE competition offers a total of $7000 in cash awards including:
Robert F. Brennan Award for Best Overall Entry by an Individual - $2000
Chosen from first place winners in categories 1-12, the overall winner
will
receive a $1,750 cash award plus $250 for winning one of theeleven
individual categories.
James D. Carper Award for Best Entry by aYoung Journalist - $250 plus
other
winnings if applicable (to be eligible, work must be created by and
submitted by individuals 30 years or younger as of December 31, 2006,
and
entered in one of the twelve individual categories. This winnerwill
receive
a $250 cash award, and is also eligible to win the category and the
overall
individual award if so chosen by the judges.
First Place Category Winners in 21 Categories - $250 per winning
category
(entrants are eligible to win multiple categories)Twelve (12)
categories for
individually bylined work, and nine (9) categories for teams of
journalists.
$250 cash will be awarded to each individual category winner and/or
winning
team.
First and second place winners (and each listed team member) will
receive
award certificates as well as receive complimentary admission to
NAREE’s
41st Annual Conference and invited to a special reception and NAREE’s
Meet
the Press.
All winners will be notified by April 1 and invited to attend the award
luncheon ceremony at NAREE's annual conference in June. Those unable to
attend will receive their awards by mail AFTER the awards presentation.
Award information is embargoed until after the awards program and will
be
posted to www.naree.org no later than 72 hours after the awards
ceremony.
Individual Awards: Single byline required for categories 1 - 12
1. Best Newspaper Report -More than 250,000 circulation
2. Best Newspaper Report -Less than 250,000 circulation
3. Best Commercial Real Estate Report (All Media)
4. Best General Circulation/Shelter Magazine Report
5. Best Trade Magazine Report. Report that appears in a magazine
published
for the real estate industry,not consumers (whether real estate,
construction,development, financial or home design)
6. Best Online Report
7. Best Web Blog (Webcast or podcast)
8. Best Broadcast Report (Radio, Television, Online live or prerecorded
scripted report with standard outcue)
9. Best Freelance Report (All Media)
10. Best Column (All Media, requires submission of 3 columns)
11. Best Serial Report (All Media, requires submission of 3 consecutive
reports in a series)
12. Best Collection of Work by an Individual (Real estate or home
design
content)
Team Awards: Categories 13-21 only
13. Best Newspaper Real Estate Section More than 250,000 Circulation
(Requires submission of 3 sections devoted to real estate coverage)
14. Best Newspaper Real Estate Section Less than 250,000 Circulation
(Requires submission of 3 sections devoted to real estate coverage)
15. Best Newspaper Home Section More than 250,000 Circulation (Requires
submission of 3 sections)
16. Best Newspaper Home Section Less than 250,000 Circulation (Requires
submission of 3 sections)
17. Best General Circulation/Shelter Magazine - Covering news and
features
on home design, construction, remodeling, real estate and/or consumer
finance. (Requires submission of 3 issues)
18. Best Building and Development Magazine - Covering home design, home
construction, and commercial construction. (Requires submission of 3
issues)
19. Best Financial Real Estate Magazine - Covering mortgages, financial
reports and financial trends relating to the real estate industry.
(Requires
submission of 3 issues)
20. Best Web Site - Solely devoted to real estate and/or home and
design
21. Best Team Report (All Media) - All eligible multiple byline works
including serial reports and columns with multiple bylines may enter
this
category
Judging
The competition is slated to be judged by journalism faculty of the
E.W.
Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Judges will be the
sole
arbiters of the awards. Judges may chose not to bestow an award in a
particular category. Judges will consider criteria appropriate to the
category including, but not limited to:
• clarity of writing
• objectivity
• originality
• depth of reporting
• design (if applicable)
Eligibility
• Entrants must be full-time journalists — both NAREE members and non
members — working for independent news outlets These include
newspapers,
magazines, Web sites, broadcast programs and newsletters with editorial
content not affiliated with, or subject to, the policies or review of
trade
associations, special interest groups, and/or advertising departments.
• The work entered must have been published, posted, or aired between
January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006.*
• Competition entry forms must be postmarked on or before February 5,
2007.
• An entrant may submit only one entry per category, but may enter as
many
categories as he or she chooses after determining eligibility.
Competition
judges reserve the right to decide if an entry is in the proper
category,
and to move those they determine need reassignment. NAREE also reserves
the
right to cancel a category if fewer than five entries are received in
the
category. (Entry fee will be refunded if category is canceled, and
entry
cannot be reassigned.)
Entry Instructions
Each completed entry in each category must include:
1. Entry fee — First entry is free to NAREE members. Each additional
entry
is $15. Non-members pay $75 for the first entry and $15 for each
additional
entry, and may elect to join the association by checking the
appropriate box
on entry form. If one check is submitted for numerous entries, an
itemized
tally sheet is required. (All entries submitted without fees or
itemized
tally sheet may be disqualified.)
2. Entry Form — Each line must be completed on the form. (Entry may be
disqualified if lines are skipped.)
3. Summary - Attach a brief summary (no more than 150 words) describing
the
intended audience for the publication, Web site or broadcast. Explain
why
the entry serves the target audience, what is original about the story
idea/content, why the reporting is innovative, and if applicable, how a
creative risk was taken.
4. Entry — Original tear sheet or photocopy of newspaper and/or
magazine
article(s), printout of online report, audio cassette, video cassette
(VHS
format) or DVD or CD with protective cases are permitted. The
publication
name and date must be visible on originals and copies of submissions.
Online
and broadcast reports must also show name and date on submission. Paper
clip
entry fee to completed entry form and staple (tape) entry form to upper
left-hand corner of entry. Do not put entries in binders with plastic
sleeves. Do not mount articles on cardboard.
5. Winning entries will be displayed at the awards ceremony in June
2007.
No entries will be returned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Best Column, category 9 and Best Serial Report, category 10 — Submit
three
(3) columns or three (3) serial reports.
Best Collection of Work by an Individual, category 12 — Submit three
(3)
samples of work. May be in the same medium or in a variety of media.
Best Sections, categories 13 - 16 — Submit three (3) editorial real
estate
or home sections in a 10 by 13 envelope, a larger envelope or an
overnight
shipping box (12in. by 12in. by 3in. deep is acceptable). Note: "Best
Section" entries will also be judged on overall graphics presentation
and
use of graphic elements to help communicate the message to the readers.
Best Magazines, categories 17 & 18, 19 — Submit three (3) issues.
Best Web Blog category 7 or Best Web site category 20 — Because of the
interactive nature of Web sites, jurors will look at the Blog or Web
site on
a given day during the judging period. Judging criteria will include
editorial content, design, and ease of use. Include the Blog URL or Web
address on the summary sheet and application. Note as in all other
categories, categories 7 and 20 are being judged for their professional
journalistic content.
