Here’s an in-state alternative: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Located between Dunmore and Green Bank in Pocahontas County, WV 66 provides an 11-mile link to Cass at Slatyfork.

The state park has three steam locomotive tours: The Whittaker Station Run to a recreated logging camp or travel to some of the highest elevations in Little Switzerland (Spruce and Bald Knob). Bald has nearly an elevation of 5,000 feet which allows views of two states. With a climate typical of Canada, plants typical of the Canadian wilderness will be found there.

The Whittaker run is for two hours and the mountain runs are about 4 ½ hours.

In addition, the park sponsors a Fiddles and Vittles dinner train with a buffet dinner and bluegrass performances (July 19, July 26, Aug 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. A Murder Mystery Dinner Train runs July 25, August 29, and Sept. 26. Fall Foliage Runs begin September 24. Also, on October 25, the spooks climb aboard the locomotive for a Halloween event you won’t forget.
