Suspect Arrested After Hospital Discharge

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- One of the men injured during the Fourth Avenue shooting that left one former Marshall University football player dead was charged with First Degree murder and booked into the Western Regional Jail at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 6.
 
Jerel Garner, 26, from Kanawha County had just been released from St. Mary’s Medical Center when the arrest occurred.
 
The suspect was one of the three persons shot just after 3 a.m. July 5, 2008, outside Fluid, formerly the Monkeybar, 611 Fourth Avenue.
 
Donte Newsome, a former Marshall University football player and current member of the Amarillo Dusters in the Arena Football 2 league. Newsome, who had played for the Huntington Heroes, had scored eleven touchdowns in eight games.
 
One friend on the website wrote that Newsome was “one of the good guys” who had rescued her from drunken college parties. “God decided to take one of the good guys back from this crazy world.”
