Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntington News Network Columnist
Huntington, WV (HNN) – Since the Thanksgiving season kicks off this
weekend, movies open on Friday (Nov. 17), as well as Wed (Nov. 22),
rather
than Friday Nov. 24. That means, some of the schedules will be
incomplete,
particularly what’s leaving on Tuesday Nov. 21 and what’s arriving Nov.
22.
Here’s a look at the possibilities:
New Mainstreamers …
Casino Royale: Daniel Craig debuts as the new 007 with a license to
kill.
After earning his “license,” James Bond tracks a terrorist cell that
leads
him to a Montenegro casino.
Happy Feet: The family friendly animation treat that hopes to capture
some
of the “March of the Penguins” and “Madagascar” formula.
Let’s Go To Prison: Since “The Longest Yard” prison comedies have been
cool,
so here comes career criminal (Dax Shepard) and a rich snob (Will
Arnett) in
a Bob Odenkirk (“Melvin Goes to Dinner,” “Pity Card”) directed film.
His TV
credits include “Freak Show,” “Tom Goes to the Mayor,” “Arrested
Development,” and a digital line up of others.
Since this is Turkey Week (or leading to it), the following will open
Wed.
Nov. 22 , depending on your market: Déjà vu (Denzel Washington), For
Your
Consideration (Catherine O’Hara), The Fountain (Hugh Jackman), Deck the
Halls (Matthew Broderick, Danny DeVito), Tenacious D in The Pick of
Destiny
(Jack Black), and Bobby (Anthony Hopkins, Sharon Stone).
Limited Release /Art House Films
Horrorfest: If you want to get bloody eye strain, this special
reperatory of
horror flicks will keep your back chillin’ and your stomach churnin’
for
days. In fact, there’s different flicks each day. Friday’s fest
features
“Reincarnation,” Unrest” and “Dark Ride,” then Saturday, the sltate
includes
“The Gravedancers,” “The Abandoned” and “Penny Dreadful,” and Sunday
brings
“Wicked Little Things,” “The Hamiltons,” and “Snoop Doggs Hood of
Horror.”
On Monday and Tuesday, “Gravedancers” and “Unrest” as well as “Dark
Ride”
and “Reincarnation” will be repeated. (Marquee Pullman Square and
Galleria

Fast Food Nation: A fast food exec (Greg Kinnear) travels to a packing
plant
in Colorado to investigate whether cow manure has been mixed into the
hamburgers. Richard (Before Sunset,” “Dazed and Confused,” “School of
Rock”)
Linklater directs. Park Place Stadium Cinemas
The Queen: A behind the scenes look at the struggle between Queen
Elizabeth
II and Prime Minister Tony Blair following the death of Princess Diana
to
find a compromise between a “private” Royal family tragedy and the
subjects
demand for a state funeral. Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen and James
Cromwell
star. It received a five minute standing ovation at the Venice Film
Festival. Marquee Pullman Square Exclusive
Babel: Winner of three big prizes at Cannes (Best Director, Prize of
the
Ecumenical Jury, Technical Grand Prize and nominated for Golden Palm),
“Babel” captures three stories set in Morocco, Tunisia, Mexico, and
Japan.
Complicated, like the state of world affairs, the ensemble cast film,
the
story begins with tragedy striking a married couple on vacation. Brad
Pitt,
Gael Garcia Bernal and Cate Blanchett are three of the cast members.
According to reviews, this serious , thought-provoking production
stylishly
captures the aura and rhythms of life in each individual country.
(Marquee
Pullman Square Exclusive)
Harsh Times: Gritty screenwriter David (“Dark Blue”, “Training Day”)
Ayer
makes his directorial debut in this odyssey of a Gulf War vet
(Christian
Bale) who is turned down for a job with the LAPD. The distressed vet
recruits a childhood friend for a drunken joyride through the
underbelly of
L.A. The two start planning their future’s together, but the Gulf War
vet
begins having vivid delusions. (Marquee Pullman Square Exclusive)
Fa
cing the Giants: Reminiscent of “Pay It Forward,” a church shot this
uplifting movie with one camera and a very low budget; still, under the
“with God all things are possible” banner, a losing coach and an
underdog
Christian high school football team battle powerful opposition -- fear
and
failure.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Although squirt guns, rice, lighters,
and
other projectiles are forbidden, you can brush up on your Time Warp
dance
and check out those character costumes. The long running and cult
favorite
continues a multiple weekend run at the Cinema with the shadow cast
now
accompanying the on screen action.
(Note: Times and Titles subject to change at discretion of film
bookers.
Double check websites to verify times or to purchase on line tickets.
Some
cinemas have changed to school session hours i.e. no matinees on
weekdays.
Consult individual cinema for schedule.)
