Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers…The trailer has arrived.

You may have watched the “We Are Marshall” preview on the internet or even at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium, but there’s only one place where it was meant to be seen --- on a giant silver screen. Beginning Friday, you can see it in front of “Gridiron Gang” which opens at theatres around the area.

You will likely find that the theatrical environment serves up a much more intimate and intense experience as you focus on the flickering larger than life images. Plus, extras, you might see yourself in the chant scene or the scene where Coach Jack Lengyl (Matthew McConaughey) walks along Merrill Avenue to the stands.

Although lots of Herd fans may pluck down their $$$ just to see the trailer, “Gridiron Gang” itself has potential with a more youthful spin on “The Longest Yard.” The Rock plays a counselor at an L.A. juvenile detention center which launches a football program as a rehab tool, but will high schools agree to compete with a team made up of your criminals?

For a legendary unsolved true crime story, take a shot at Brian (“Carrie”) DePalma’s “The Black Dahlia,” which flashes into 1940’s LA where a beautiful young actress has been found mutilated on a vacant lot. Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart investigate the crime based on the creepy novel by James (“LA Confidential”) Ellroy.

Zach Braff and Jacinda Barrett star in “The Last Kiss,” a wandering heart saga in which a man after years of living together starts doubting the relationship after his partner becomes pregnant.

Finally, the family film of the week has a boy traveling across the country to return Babe Ruth’s bat before the final game of the 1932 World Series. “Everyone’s Hero” was partially directed by the late Christopher Reeve; ironically, his widow Dana, who died before “Hero’s” completion provides the voice of one of the characters. The movie had been originally titled “Yankee Irving.”

Incidentally, MU fans, you can get another look at the work of Anthony Mackie, as he co-stars in “Crossover.” Mackie, as you know, plays Nate Ruffin in “WAM.”

CONTINUING Limited Release /Art House Films

Beautifully shot, this surprise San Francisco Film Fest entry blends romance, suspense, supernatural illusions and star-crossed lovers into early 1900’s Vienna, where a magician falls in love with a lady well above his social standing. “The Illusionist” must use his magic to win her back from a prince. ( Marquee Pullman Square)

Blending a little art house and a whole lot family, “Little Miss Sunshine” sends a very dysfunctional family in a VW bus to California from New Mexico in hopes that their young daughter will make the beauty pageant finals. The characters include a suicidal Steve Carrell, a smack addicted Alan Arkin and Abigail Breslin stealing Dakota Fanning’s crown. Theatres in Beckley, Charleston and Huntington have this one!

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” – Although squirt guns, rice, lighters, and other projectiles are forbidden, you can brush up on your Time Warp dance and check out those character costumes. The long running and cult favorite continues a multiple weekend run at the Cinema. Auditions for membership in the ‘shadow cast’ are on going

You’re welcome to act out the lines and have fun. A ‘shadow cast’ will be coming soon as well as a group of people to welcome first timers to the showing.

(Note: Times and Titles subject to change at discretion of film bookers. Double check websites to verify times or to purchase on line tickets. Some cinemas have changed to school session hours i.e. no matinees on weekdays. Consult individual cinema for schedule.)
