Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers…Labor Day weekend officially marks the end of summer and the return to school, but for the flicks, it’s a signal to turn off the action and children’s stuff and attempt to attract decent audiences in one of the roughest months for movie attendance as it competes with football games, school, and other fall activities.

For this week, three flicks rush out of the gate hoping to prevent “Invincible” from scoring a second top of the chart touchdown. For MU fans, you can get another look at the work of Anthony Mackie, as he co-stars in “Crossover.” Mackie, as you know, plays Nate Ruffin in “WAM.”

Wicker Man: Updating a 1973 Christopher Lee film, Anthony (“Frenzy” and “Sleuth”) Shaffer penned the story and screenplay of the original. Neil (“Possession,” “Nurse Betty”) has reshaped the screenplay as he directs Nicholas Cage, as a sheriff investigating a child’s disappearance from an island. Natch, he discovers a secretive community which has a horrible secret concerning the occult. At least one viewer has commented that the re-make stands on its own. Ellen (“The Exorcist”) Burstyn also stars.

Crossover: Hoping to capture some of the sports fans from “Invincible,” “Crossover” focuses on two talent basketball players -- one seeking a UCLA pre-med athletic scholarship and another hoping to just get his GED and prevail in an “underground” ball game. Wesley Jonathan and Anthony (“We Are Marshall” ) Mackie star.

Crank: Billed as a rehash of the 1996 “Rage,” a hit man (Jason Statham) has poison injected into his body. If his heart pulsates below a certain rate, the poison will kill him. Now, the hit man must find his own killer before he succumbs.

New Limited Release /Art House Films

Beautifully shot, this surprise San Francisco Film Fest entry blends romance, suspense, supernatural illusions and star-crossed lovers into early 1900’s Vienna, where a magician falls in love with a lady well above his social standing. “The Illusionist” must use his magic to win her back from a prince. (Opens Friday, Marquee Pullman Square)

Blending a little art house and a whole lot family, “Little Miss Sunshine” sends a very dysfunctional family in a VW bus to California from New Mexico in hopes that their young daughter will make the beauty pageant finals. The characters include a suicidal Steve Carrell, a smack addicted Alan Arkin and Abigail Breslin stealing Dakota Fanning’s crown. Theatre in Beckley, Charleston and Huntington have this one!

In case you missed Al Gore’s documentary on global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth” will be playing three shows daily at the Galleria 14 in Beckley.

Continuing Art/Festival/Limited Releases …

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Although squirt guns, rice, lighters, and other projectiles are forbidden, you can brush up on your Time Warp dance and check out those character costumes. The long running and cult favorite continues a multiple weekend run at the Cinema. Auditions for membership in the ‘shadow cast’ are on going.

You’re welcome to act out the lines and have fun. A ‘shadow cast’ will be coming soon as well as a group of people to welcome first timers to the showing.

(Note: Times and Titles subject to change at discretion of film bookers. Double check websites to verify times or to purchase on line tickets. Some cinemas have changed to school session hours i.e. no matinees on weekdays. Consult individual cinema for schedule.)
