Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford
Huntington News Network Columnist

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers …Following a weekend with elongated reptiles slithering on a stainless steel flying machine, Hollywood believes we’d like to soar like an Eagle or eat worms.

Actually, it’s a Philadelphia Eagle, though, as a football fan’s dream comes true--- he’s picked for the pro squad at a tryout camp, even though he had no high school or college experience. Dramatizing the story of Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg), Disney reunites the producers of “The Rookie” and “Miracle” to recount how this substitute teacher and part time bartender spent three years in the pros.

Titled “Invincible,” you can not help but note that the sports and football themes are similar to “We Are Marshall.” But studios dump their left overs in August and release their big stuff at Christmas. ‘Nuff said.

If you didn’t get enough critters with the slithering snakes, you might want to learn “How to Eat Fried Worms.” Remaking an 80s TV movie, this coming of age yarn starts the new school year with a fifth grader coping with a bully. For a little offbeat would-be raunchy , “Beerfest” pits the “Magnificent Five” from America attempting to bring home a trophy from an underground beer and games contest in Germany.

Finally, “Idlewild” -- a Speakeasy musical set in the Prohibition-era of the American South -- pits hard choices on two levels: Gangsters have their eyes on the club and the piano player partner (Andre Benjamin) must choose between his love Angel (Paula Patton) or obligations to his dad (Ben Vereen).

New Limited Release /Art House Films

Blending a little art house and a whole lot family, “Little Miss Sunshine” sends a very dysfunctional family in a VW bus to California from New Mexico in hopes that their young daughter will make the beauty pageant finals. The characters include a suicidal Steve Carell, a smack addicted Alan Arkin and Abigail Breslin stealing Dakota Fanning’s crown. Theatres in Beckley, Charleston and Huntington have this one!

Continuing Art/Festival/Limited Releases …

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Although squirt guns, rice, lighters, and other projectiles are forbidden, you can brush up on your Time Warp dance and check out those character costumes. The long running and cult favorite continues a multiple weekend run at the Cinema. Auditions for membership in the ‘shadow cast’ are on going You’re welcome to act out the lines and have fun. A ‘shadow cast’ will be coming soon as well as a group of people to welcome first timers to the showing.
