Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers… Last week we looked up in the sky, and this Friday, we fall down into a “Dead Man’s Chest,” in particular Johnny Depp’s as the sequel to “Pirates of the Caribbean” debuts. Some theatres have Thursday midnight shows; otherwise it opens on Friday.

Watch July 21 for the "We Are Marshall" preview on the front of "Lady in the Water."

Continuing Art/Festival/Limited Releases …

“Indie” lovers will have to fork over bucks and head to Huntington this week to catch the Al Gore global warming doc and to get a look at the opening film from Sundance 2006.

An Inconvenient Truth – Described as a rallying cry to protect the Earth from a deepening global climate crisis, Director Davis Guggenheim weaves global warming science with the former vice president’s advocacy for an environmental message stripped free of politics. The documentary has been called charming, funny, engaging and haunting. Exclusive Showing(s) at Marquee Cinemas Pullman Square and the Warner Theatre (Morgantown); Ends Thursday at Marquee Southridge, Charleston. Interestingly, while one internet link claims that scientists have endorsed the warming warning as REAL, another site has a link to where others have called it “junk science.”

See it to make your own conclusion. (Ends Thursday @ Marquee Southridge; Continues at Marquee Pullman with altered time schedule.

LAST CALLS….

Friends With Money – Jennifer (“The Break Up” and formerly ‘Rachel’ on “Friends”) Aniston teams with writer/director Nicole (“Walking & Talking”) Holofcener for a film that observes the rollercoaster rides in relationships particularly four lifelong friends as it examines the unspoken divides in social classes. While one critic stated “serious afterthought reveals layers of depth and meaning anchored by a stringent critique of both sexes,” another praised the watching “great actresses get material worthy of them,” and another said “it is an exquisitely calibrated hypermodern comedy of manners.” Containing “smart, snarky dialogue,” the production was also called a “dissection of feminine net-worth envy.” Regarded as gloomy and downbeat, one review said that in a good sense the flick (or its characters?) should be on Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil.” Hilarity, heartbreak and indecision dominate in what the Hollywood Reporter said was “pitch perfect” burrowing deep into the mind set of upper middle class Angelenos “anxious to strike the right balance among career, family, love life and money but never quite pulling it off.” (Exclusive at Cinema 4 in Huntington). A Prairie Home Companion: If you want to travel to Hurricane , you can catch Robert Altman’s “A Prairie Home Companion” playing Teays Valley Cinemas but only for two shows daily. It will be dropped within the next week.

Featuring Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, Garrison Keillor , Kevin Kline, Lindsay Lohan, Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep, the film tells a true-to-life story of the famed Public Radio series, opening at Mickey’s Diner just a few blocks from the Fitzgerald Theatre in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. Fans of the weekly program should find it laudable. Or, in the words of Keillor, “We come from people who brought us up to believe that life is a struggle, and if you should feel really, really happy, be patient: this will pass.”
