EDITORIAL: NYC Mosque: Where Do Manchin and Oliverio Stand?

This must be a first: a Speaker of the House of Representatives states publicly that there is a need for a federal investigation into those who find fault with locating a mosque at Ground Zero in New York City.

Nevermind the First Amendment protections afforded all American citizens of their right to free speech.

That's exactly what happened this week when San Francisco's own Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman and Speaker of the House of Represenatives, shocked even the national media with her call for an investigation of those who have concerns with the proposed Manhattan mosque.

We thought liberals like Pelosi were open-minded and free thinkers. You know, live and let live! But apparently that is not the case since Pelosi's Democratic Congressional candidates were taking it on the chin after President Obama appeared to be endorsing the mosque project a few days ago

What a way to strike back, Nancy. Now the national Democrats have dug their grave even worse on this issue. Being friendly to radical Islam was bad enough, but suggesting that the families of 9/11 victims should be silenced by an official of the U.S. government?

This is getting rather bad for the Democrats.

But what about Mike Oliverio, candidate for Congress in West VIrginia's First District? He's been all over the map as to whether he supports Pelosi, but he finally settled down long enough to assure Pelosi and Company in D.C. that he would not "rock the boat" and would vote for the Democratic candidate for Speaker if he gets elected.

That means he'll be voting for Pelosi. Does it also mean that Oliverio will be endorsing some of Pelosi's ideas, like investigating those who disagree with Her Majesty?

And what about Governor Manchin, who couldn't say enough about President Obama's unpopular Obamacare health reform package. Does he agree with his President that building a mosque at the very site where nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives to radicals is a good idea?

Oliverio and Manchin can't have it both ways. Either they must publicly repudiate their Democratic leaders and risk losing some of the money they offer their campaigns or they must try to persuade us why the Manhattan mosque and investigating 9/11 families who object to its placement are both good ideas.

Do Olivero and Manchin represent Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco in Congress? Or West Virginia? The choice is theirs.

And ours come November.
