LETTER TO EDITOR: Conservatives Opposed U.S. Entry into WWII

Dear Editor: Your correspondent Jim Kouri had a lot of good points on the Mike Wallace report on his date with the Iranian president until he got to the place where he said the left was opposed to the war until the Soviets were attacked. Reality is that most conservatives opposed the war or at least Roosevelt's preparations for the possibility. The America First bunch was composed of all sorts of folks from left to right including Lindbergh and his ilk who thought we should appease the Nazis.

Kouri should also be aware that it was a liberal 52-year old Senator from Illinois, Paul Douglas, who left his comfortable place and enlisted in the Marines and participated in combat while most of his conservative colleagues preferred to sit on their deferred butts. He should also be aware that Wisconsin’s Joe McCarthy, who boasted he would serve for the duration left his deferred judicial seat, did not become a gunner and used his right to get an early discharge in order to run for political office.

Kouri is correct on Wallace but needs to get some history education.
