DEVOTION: Hold on a Minute
By Beth Bondurant
How many times do we remember saying... Can you wait... just a minute?
Needless to say we didn't mean it might only be 60 seconds before we continued with either our answer or our responsibility. Hold on a minute could mean a few minutes... hours...days...weeks...months...years... and even a lifetime.
Scripture has a timeline for work and for rest... both being of great importance.
"Work six days, doing everything you have to do, but the seventh day is a Sabbath, a Rest Day—no work: not you, your son, your daughter, your servant, your maid or any of your animals, and not even the foreigner visiting your town. That way everyone will get the same rest as you."
"Can you wait... just a minute?"
How much time do we give ourselves or one another when it comes to getting things done we see as necessary and urgent.
How impatient are we when it comes to delay and opposition when we want something NOW.
We text and twitter and expect tangible thought or trade to thrive instantaneously.
We compound our expectations by imagining creation to have been completed in 6 days.
We want yesterday our vision of the future to have transpired.
We consider all things possible in the blink of an eye.
"There's an opportune time to do things, a right time for everything on the earth."
O God... forgive me. I want it NOW! No matter what the consequences... I expect fulfillment immediately. When I ask... I demand an answer. There's no excuse for waiting... for trusting... for consideration of all.. for time lapse in development. O God, help me to see the wisdom of Your Way. Season upon season... century to century... with no knowledge of date or year... guide me from sunrise to sunset... one day at a time. Saturate my mind, body and spirit with Your presence of peace... hope... love and joy... in the midst of "the force" of life. Enable the meaning of "resting in the Lord" and instruct my mind, body, heart and spirit to... hold on a minute.
