DEVOTION: Incitement
By Beth Bondurant
A continuous stream of local break ins have incited neighbors to be 'on the watch' for uninvited persons in and around their homes during the day as well as during the night. Living in a calm and secure location for so many years, it has taken numerous thefts to motivate awareness and response to this intimidating problem.
Generosity and caring have been strong characteristics of folks in this community and it is troubling to see how one small group of persons can taint the security and shalom of an entire area.
How do we best react when "stormy weather" approaches and insecurity threatens our peaceful terrain.
Communication alerts us to a impending danger. The TV blares out in loud warning and red letter information when a storm is predicted. Announcers even suggest that if power is out that others who know will call and inform folks to be aware of what might be coming their way.
We are so connected with one another... that getting the word out is one way we might avert calamity.
"Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification."
Knowing that those around us care enough to call... to check... to watch... to share... gives us strength to carry on even when things seem "to much to bear".
We are a "called out people"... and though we enjoy living within "closed doors"... we rely on our unity for harmonious existence.
O God, help me remember I am one part of a whole. When I hurt... it hurts others. Help me be aware today as to what I might do to bring healing and help to the people I see everyday. Attune my heart and mind to listening and hearing. Empower strength and understanding... in the midst of today's challenges. Guide me in the use of gracious words and actions. Incite my compassion for Shalom. Attend to our security and unity that comes through your love and mercy. You know our needs and we do so require YOUR incitement.
