Day-Trip to Scenic Cass, West Virginia
Photos by Matt Pinson
Photo Photo
Photo Photo
Cass WV was founded as a company town in 1900 by West Virginia Pulp and Paper. A rail line was carved out of the wilderness to reach the timber. It ran all the way to the top of Bald Knob, more than 4,800 feet above sea level, the second highest point in the state after Spruce Knob (4,861 feet) in Pendleton County . Since 1962 Cass has been owned and operated by the state of West Virginia as Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The Pocahontas County town is being restored to its original turn of the century condition. The state park is one of the most unusual in the entire nation and draws tens of thousands of tourists from all over the country and the world each year during the season. Tourists can choose between train trips to Whittaker Station, about halfway up the mountain, or all the way to the top of Bald Knob. | View Photos
